This round you'll get the chance to take a look back at some of your previous work and reuse your favorite parts. This is a remake activity with a twist: instead of reimagining one icon at a time, you'll be remaking two icons in one! Each participant will be given random pairs of icons (let's call these icons the "parents") from their own body of work, and the icon maker's job is to create one new icon (a "child icon") by combining qualities that are present in the parents, much like a child would inherit traits.
I'll illustrate this with icons by other makers (the icons in the crossed column obviously weren't actually made this way, these are just random examples!):

SOME NOTES (Please read these carefully!)
- Only one new icon for each pair of parents
- The child doesn't have to inherit every single aspect from one of the parents. So, if you want to use text or a cut background for example, you can do so even if this technique isn't used in either of the parents. It's enough that at least one trait is inherited from each parent.
- The inherited qualities can be anything from subject choice (character, fandom, scene) to techniques (texture use, composition, text, coloring...) to even something more subtle (a mood, a pose, a type of setting...). Harder modes have some restrictions to this, see the mode listing for more details!
- The formatting used for your post is free, but it should make it clear which icons are the actual new entries for this challenge, which icons were the parent icons for each new icon, and which qualities the new icons inherit from the parents. Feel free to hide the extra info behind a spoiler cut (like in the tmfaction post) if you don't want the main post to look too crowded. I've provided an HTML table to make coding a bit easier for you.
- If you get parent icons that you're not happy with, don't panic! You can still make good icons using "bad" parents, because the point is not to directly reuse parts of your older icons, elevating the selected traits from what they originally looked like is 100% encouraged.
- I will only re-randomize for you if you've already used all your 20 pairs and want to enter another set
- I'll give everyone 20 parent icon pairs, but you can still make 5-20 icons by choosing 5-20 of the pairs to use
- You don't need to fill the pairs in order, so for example if you only want to make 5 icons, you can freely choose which 5 pairs you'll use
- The parent icons will be given in fixed pairs, so don't mix and match them in a different way (as in taking the first parent from the first given pair and the second parent from the second pair), this would be too easy!
NORMAL MODE: You're free to cross the parent icons in any way you want to, as long as some elements are picked from both parents. These elements can be anything: technical, thematic, subject-based, even vague and broad qualities are ok for this mode, such as "happy mood" or "comedic scene".
HARD MODE: Same as the above, but more technical; for this mode the technical style specifically should be a combination of the parents: aspects like coloring style, cropping, contrast, lighting, composition and texture use are acceptable things to inherit. Vague thematic elements or subject alone aren't acceptable inherited traits in this mode (of course they too can be present as an extra).
EXTRA HARD MODE: Same as Hard mode, except (at least one) screencap choice must also be inherited from one of the parents. There are two slightly different ways to do this, and you can switch between these in your Extra hard mode set:
Option 1 - inherit only the screencap from the image provider parent and (some aspects of) the technical style from the other parent, OR
Option 2 - create a mix of the technical styles of the parent icons, like in Hard mode, and on top of that also use the screencap from one of the parents.
We understand that screencap availability might be an issue, many previous galleries are now gone and a specific screencap might be hard to find again anyway; if none of the images used in the parent icons can be found with reasonable effort, you may pick a cap that's "close enough" (same fandom/character). If multiple screencaps are used in the image provider parent, you can choose one or more to use in the child. It's ok to also use additional images, as long as at least one visible image comes from one of the parents.
TABLE FOR FORMATTING
Feel free to modify or use your own! This only has five rows, copy as many times as needed.
HOW TO ASK FOR ICON PAIRS
If you want to play, reply to the thread titled "Ask for icon pairs here" with a link to your icon journal/tag. I'll reply asap with twenty randomized pairs of icons from your posts (this may still take a while, please be patient!). Please note that you should have at least a few public icon posts for me to be able to do this.
If you've had previous icon communities/journals, they won't be included in the randomizing, only the icons in your current community count. I could make an exception if you've moved to a new icon community very recently so that there's only a couple of posts (say, less than 100 icons in total) in your current one; in this case also provide a link to your previous community/tag. Some of you might have a very long iconmaking history, and if you want to limit the randomized icons to your newer work only, specifically request this in your comment and provide a link to the oldest post you want to be included in the randomizing.
If any watermarked Photobucket icons or icons that give me those weird "imgprx" links get randomized, I'll reupload them to Imgur for convenience and clarity.
Asking for pairs isn't considered a signup, don't worry if you can't get the set done!
