Info + Q&A
Welcome to
somein30!

This is a monthly icon challenge, inspired by other 20in20/20in30/10in30 icon challenge communities, such as
monthlyinspo,
10in30,
themeofthemonth,
20inspirations,
inspired20in20, and
20muses. There hasn't been an active community like this for a few months now, and I thought I'd try to fill the void.
This community was originally created on LiveJournal (
somein30) in the fall of 2020, because my estimation was that there were actually quite a few iconmakers still more or less present there, but a couple of things had prevented us from entering regular 20in20 type communities even when they were available:
- a lot of us were too busy / uninspired / rusty for a full 20-icon set, or even a set of 10 icons
- icon communities are typically competitive, which raises the bar of entering them if we're not completely happy with the set
This community aims to solve both of these issues with these main ideas:
1. This is a non-competitive community, meaning there will be no set voting. There is only voting to select the best icon from each participant's set. While competition can be inspiring, there are other icon communities for that. I want this to be an easily approachable community for people who may be beginning iconmakers or returning after a hiatus or just not feeling at their best at the moment, but want to get better by getting some practise. This will be a good environment for that, while also providing more experienced makers some extra challenge in the form of hard mode options in some challenges.
2. You choose the size of your icon set. If you're inspired to make a full set of 20, awesome! But if you only have time for 10 or even just 5, it's fine, just enter what you've got. It doesn't matter that sets are different sizes, since there will be no need to compare them in the votings. The sets need to be between 5-20 icons (5 feels like the minimum of what could reasonably be called "a set", and more than 20 would make the voting posts cluttered). But of course, feel free to have as many alts/extras in your posts as you like. You can edit your post and add more icons to it until the end of the challenge.

Where do I sign up?
There will be no signups, you can just enter the challenge straight away.
What can I icon?
You can icon absolutely anything (tv, movies, cartoons, anime, celebs, stock, everything goes).
Are multifandom entries ok?
Yes, you can use as many different fandoms in a post as you want, and even mix different types of subjects, for example stock and fandom icons, in one entry.
Can I enter from outside of DW?
This community exists in LiveJournal as well as Dreamwidth. The LJ version:
somein30
The LJ version will close in June 2022, but during this transition period you may enter your set to either community, or both. Sets posted to either will make their way into the voting at the end of the challenge.
After the LJ community expires, you can still enter from outside of DW with the usual method. You bave two options:
If you have an account or can post with OpenID, you can enter normally and just link to a set that's hosted somewhere else. If it's a site that requires registration, some note on how people can comment there would be appreciated.
If you for some reason can't or rather wouldn't make a post on DW, but are able to leave a comment, there is now starting with round 12 a separate thread in each challenge post for entries outside of DW. You can enter there with a comment that contains three sample icons and a link (and commenting advice if needed - would be appreciated for unfamiliar sites, aka anything other than LiveJournal), just like you would with a post. The mods will make an entry post for you so that others will notice your entry, but this might take a few days, so be patient when using this option!
Unfortunately there is no option to enter here if you don't have the ability to comment here on DW at all. We don't see a need to allow this, since the person in this scenario wouldn't be able to comment around to other makers, which is a big part of the fun in communities like this.
How do I comment to entries outside of DW?
If you have an account there, you can use that of course. If not, for LiveJournal (and other places that support it) you can use OpenID and provide your journal link ( https://(username).dreamwidth.org , replace the placeholder with your own username) to the OpenID field.
If it's another site that doesn't support OpenID, hopefully the maker will provide some tips.
If you have any questions or need to contact the mods (currently myself and
mellon) about anything, please feel free to do so here. You can also leave challenge ideas or general feedback. Anonymous commenting is on, anonymous comments are screened.

(I'm an overanxious paralegal and never accepted to the new TOS on LJ, so I still have this account, but I can't use it for posting entries.)
